In touch with… Jahan Emery

With a budding obsession for cameras and love of cinema, it was only a matter of time before Jahan Emery turned his passion into a fulltime vocation. As the Brand team’s videographer, you’ll find Jahan either behind the lens filming or behind the screen editing… then behind a volleyball net on weekends.

What is your role here at Flinders?

I work in the Brand team, which is a part of Marketing and Student Recruitment, as our videographer, and I’ve been in the role since the start of February. I spend most of my team filming and editing videos, as well as creating animations to assist with our central brand campaigns and student recruitment goals.

You’ve worked in all mediums of marketing, what drew you to specialise in videography?

I started getting really into photography about six years ago when I bought a camera for a trip to Europe. I’ve also always loved cinema so once I started getting obsessed with cameras, it was only a matter of time before I wanted to get into videography as well. Fortunately, Flinders has always been supportive of me upskilling and getting creative at work. I did a lot of training in my previous role as a Digital Content Producer to get my video skills up to scratch, so when the opportunity to work as a videographer came up in our team I jumped at it and was ecstatic when I was told I got the job.

Do you have a favourite piece of content you’ve filmed for Flinders?

My favourite bit of content I’ve filmed to date has been a video we created for May the 4th (Star Wars Day). We had the opportunity to use the Void to make it look like one of our students who was dressed as a Jedi was on a spaceship, then filmed with a bunch of robotic equipment at the Tonsley Campus. Watch it here.

What brand do you think is creating the most engaging video content right now?

For me it’s hard to go past sports apparel brands like Nike, New Balance, Adidas, etc. They’re so good at keeping their video content fresh and appealing for young audiences and their YouTube channels are always somewhere I look for visual inspiration. It looks like a really fun area to work in video production.

If roles were reversed and a crew came to film you talk about a subject you’re considered an expert in, what would that be?

I’d probably panic as I’m far better behind the lens than in front of it. But if I had to chew someone’s ear off about something, it’d probably be the Adelaide Crows.

Tell us about your ideal weekend.

Sleep in with no alarms. A walk through the city with my fiancé grabbing coffee and maybe taking my camera out with us if it’s a nice day. Playing volleyball for my club Austral Phoenix. Watching the footy at the pub with a Guinness. Catching a movie at the cinema. If I can do a couple of those things every weekend, I think that’s pretty ideal.
