New text message protections

On 1 July 2026, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) brought in important changes to text messages sent by organisations, to help protect Australians from scams.

Organisations that use branded ‘sender IDs’, where their business name appears at the top of the message, are now required to register those IDs through a new national SMS Sender ID Register.

The University has two registered sender IDs, ‘FlindersUni’ and ‘FUSED’ that have been verified so that you can recognise legitimate communications from the University and protect yourself from text message scams. These changes only apply to standard SMS and MMS text messages.

Unregistered numbers may appear as ‘Unverified’ and are your cue to exercise caution before following any links or providing details.
