Celebrating women in mathematics

International Women in Mathematics Day on 12 May celebrates women in maths and aims to inspire others towards maths journeys.

Introducing Kholoud Bakhat Alzahrani, who is studying a Master of Science ( Mathematics) at Flinders University.

Mathematics can be a creative endeavour for those who enjoy it; essential to any science, to innovation and to shaping a better world.

What inspired you to study maths at tertiary level?

In high school I Iiked reading about psychology, I also had a great tendency towards design (decor), but l loved mathematics and really enjoyed solving maths problems – it was a challenge to find the correct solutions and a sense of accomplishment at the end. So I decided to complete my studies in maths.

What most excites you about your studies?

I was drawn to its promotion of scientific responsibility, accompanied with my keen interest to develop personally. I deeply believe that specialising in mathematics will open up many opportunities for me to achieve my ambitions.

My fundamental objective is to develop expertise across the mathematics domain. This will help me make the changes I want to see instead of wishing for, and has led me to take a path where I can contribute effectively to assist the coming generations practice this field in an ideal way.

In maths, there is always a question to be asked and a problem to be solved. This stimulates a love for research in my soul.

Maths researchers have a direct impact on all other sciences. That encouraged me to be an active researcher in this discipline so I can give humanity something that I will be remembered for.

What has been your biggest challenge in your math studies?

After completing my undergraduate degree, and for my achievements, I was awarded a scholarship from my country to Canada to further my studies.

I finished more than half the time at the University of Victoria in Canada and a large part of my research, but due to circumstances that took place between the two countries (Saudi Arabia and Canada), the mission was stopped and I had to return to my country without completing what I had started and obtaining my certificate. This was extremely difficult and frustrating, but I fortunately received a scholarship to Flinders University in Australia.  I hope to complete my studies here and obtain a graduate degree in mathematics.

What would you say to young people considering a career in maths?

If you have an interest and tendency towards mathematics you will be a listener and a lover of maths, which will foster creativity. I am convinced that whoever loves any field will be creative in it, which is important for innovation in society and for personal growth.
