Outstanding leaders inducted into prestigious fellowship

Professor Graeme Young and Professor Fran Baum (pictured) have been elected as Fellows of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences for their outstanding contribution to health and medical science in Australia.

They are among 49 new Fellows from around the country who are making strides in chronic and infectious disease, mental health, neuroscience, medical physiology and cancer research.

Professor Baum is the Director of the Southgate Institute of Health, Society and Equity and an international leader in public health social science.

She has made major contributions to the understanding of the social determinants of health, health promotion and the use of qualitative methods.

Professor Graeme Young is Professor of Global Gastrointestinal Health at Flinders and a global leader in the prevention of colorectal cancer.

His contributions span epithelial and molecular biology, nutrition, biomarker development and validation, clinical and population randomised trials.

He established the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer as Director of Development and chaired the growth of the most influential global network in colorectal cancer screening, the World Endoscopy Organisation Committee.

Induction of the new Fellows took place during the Academy’s third Annual Scientific Meeting, held at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) in Adelaide.
