Identifying a missing chapter in Australian archaeology is the subject of The Annual Norman Tindale Memorial Lecture, being held at Flinders at Victoria Square on Tuesday 6 March 2018.
Professor Matthew Spriggs from the Australian National University will be speaking about the parochial tendency of early Australian archaeologists to miss the international dimension of Australia’s histories, and their failure to consider wider regional connections – such as significant Melanesian and Southeast Asian influences upon Indigenous Australian culture.
Entitled, “The Missing Chapter: Early Australian archaeologists and their regional and further connections”, the Lecture will reflect Professor Spriggs’ Laureate Project, “The Collective Biography of Archaeology in the Pacific”, which studies the history of archaeology in Oceania and its wider connections, and runs until 2020.
The lecture will take place in Room 2.2-2.3 on Level 2, 182 Victoria Square, Adelaide, from 6.00pm-9.00pm.
