Hi Everyone,
This past month has been eventful for the University Higher Degree by Research Committee (UHDRC). The Office of Graduate Research (OGR) is now fully operational in its new location. Across all colleges, HDR students have been actively engaging in events designed to support their progression and academic journeys. We are also thrilled to share exciting updates on Flinders International Postgraduate Research Scholarships, the recent introduction of Co-Pilot with Enterprise Data Protection tool for research assistance, and insights of 2024 3MT.
Scholarships
We’re pleased to announce that, with recent approval from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Flinders University will increase the number of Flinders International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (FIPRS) from four to six in 2025. This change means there will be 12 international scholarships available next year: six Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarships (International) (AGRTPS-I) and six FIPRS. Each college will be able to offer one of each type, enhancing support for our international research community.

Introduction of Co-Pilot
In a significant step forward for HDR students (and all students at Flinders University), discussions between the HDR Quality Assurance and Operational Manager (QAOM) in the OGR and the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching Innovation) have led to accelerated access to Flinders University’s preferred generative AI tool, Microsoft Co-Pilot with Enterprise Data Protection. This initiative supports the appropriate and effective use of artificial intelligence in research and academic work. With the rollout of Co-Pilot with Enterprise Data Protection, students will have access to a university-endorsed AI tool designed to support and streamline data analysis. Co-pilot offers enhanced data security and privacy, giving researchers peace of mind knowing their work is protected under the university’s stringent standards. This AI tool is also ethically compliant, aligning with both university and external research guidelines, which ensures integrity and accountability in research practices. By providing a monitored and safeguarded AI platform, the university empowers students to explore innovative solutions confidently. Once Co-Pilot with Enterprise Data Protection licenses are enabled, all HDR students will be able to leverage this AI tool, with notifications shared via Flinders in Touch, Staying in the Loop and college newsletters to confirm availability.
Record Participation in 3MT Heats – A New Format Success!
This year’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition saw record engagement, thanks to an enhanced format that allowed each College to hold its own heats, supported by the HDR Development Team in the Office of Graduate Research (OGR) with practice sessions and expert guidance. Thirty-three students participated in the heats, thirteen advanced to the semi-final, and six competed in the final. Given the success of this approach, the same format will continue in next year. To boost excitement when the competition relaunches in April, a special kick-off event will be commenced. Highlights will include a student-led panel featuring past winners, personal testimonials, and staff presentations on common pitfalls to avoid when delivering a presentation.
