The University Higher Degrees by Research Committee (UHDRC) is an important governance sub-committee of the Research Committee, which assists the Academic Senate’s Research Committee to discharge its responsibilities regarding the accreditation, quality and compliance of higher degree by research education and training.
The UHDRC has student representation in its membership to enhance its student-centred approach and voice for the governance of HDR students. Student representation is embedded in the UHDRC’s Member Composition, within its Terms of Reference (ToR), and provides for:

The committee membership comprises the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Training and Capabilities) and Dean of Graduate Research, College HDR Coordinators, two HDR student members as voting members, two HDR student alternate members, a student finance representative and HDR administrators. The term of the HDR student members is 1 year.

About Evan Woolbright
Hello, I’m a full-time PhD student in the College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences. I am a scholar of culture, gender, and media with a focus on inclusive practices in fan communities. My doctoral project examines how men are defining their masculine identities through engagement with Viking media and history. In addition to media analysis methodologies unpacking male Viking characters in film, television, and video games, I am approaching this through ethnographic data gathering from members of Neo-Norse pagan faiths and Viking-themed costuming and reenactment communities. I spent three months abroad last year interviewing participants in these groups at various Viking and Medieval festivals and historic sites.
I served for four years on the executive board of an international charity organization. During my time in that role, I created an education team to build a library of content for internal training and external communication and oversaw the translation of that material into four other languages. I am a father of three kids ranging in age from 3 to 13. I am honoured to serve as HDR student representative and welcome you to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
About Christopher Hogan
I am a full-time PhD student in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. My project is investigating the human development outcomes of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme. I’m aiming to provide insights into a research gap that has emerged between quantitative and qualitative methods in this and similar labour migration contexts to improve outcomes for participating workers and countries.
My background is in Demography and Geography through my undergraduate studies, which I completed through Flinders University. I also currently work part-time in the Population Statistics Branch at the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
I’m grateful for and looking forward to the opportunity to represent Higher Degree by Research students. Please reach out to me as one of the HDR student representatives if there is anything I can help you with!
