Advancing technology through Research with Ahlam

PhD Student, Alham

Being able to explore something so small yet so important and knowing that this knowledge can help improve technology or create new materials is what makes this field so exciting for me.”

Originally from Saudi Arabia, Ahlam has always been fascinated by physics and how everything around us works. To dive deeper into this field of study, Ahlam undertook a PhD in physics at Flinders University, where she specialised in nanoscale structure and properties of thin-layer surfaces.

With 25 diverse research study areas to choose from, including Australia’s first PhD-MBA program—students like Alham have the chance to explore a topic that ignites their passion, advancing their expertise through a Higher Degree by Research or a Masters by Research. With the fastest growth in research income of any Australian University from 2018*, Flinders continues to lead the way, demonstrating the university’s dedication to impactful research that drives real change.

Flinders University is also home to the Institute of Nanoscale Science & Technology located at the Tonsley campus – a dynamic hub for nanotechnology research and education. Here, students collaborate with businesses and industries to drive advancements that have transformed fields like medicine, solar energy, and forensics. For Ahlam, this made Flinders the ideal study destination, offering her the opportunity to thrive academically while accessing the university’s state-of-the-art, world-class technology.

“What excites me the most is the opportunity to use incredible machines, like the electron spectroscopy and ion scattering spectroscopy systems at Flinders University, to study materials in ways that weren’t possible before,” she says.

Career preparation through placement

Throughout her studies at Flinders, Ahlam was lucky to gain skills, knowledge and real-life industry experience not only through her placement but also in a six-month role that followed her thesis submission.

Through my studies, I gained hands-on experience with advanced research equipment, such as at the Electron and Ion Scattering Spectroscopy Facility. After submitting my PhD thesis, I worked as a Facility Manager for almost six months, managing these techniques, providing training to individuals, and conducting measurements for both internal and external users. This work experience has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m happy with the skills and expertise I’ve gained.”

Ahlam credits her placement opportunities with helping increase her knowledge and confidence in her research and career progression. Through these opportunities, she has developed both her independent and collaborative research skills and feels well-prepared to apply them in a future research role.

“In five years, I see myself working in a research centre, contributing to projects as part of a team and further advancing my expertise in the field,” she says.

An experience elevated by the environment

As a PhD student, Ahlam has spent countless hours on campus honing in on her studies and research. She attributes her academic success to the support and environment at Flinders University.

“Flinders has a really welcoming and safe environment. It’s easy to stay on campus late because security is always around, so I feel comfortable working into the evening”.

Ahlam explains that she received endless support not only from her supervisors and research staff but also from other university staff, such as the librarians, who created a safe, welcoming, and helpful space for Alham to focus, relax, and easily access all the resources she needed.

“The Student Hub and Library are great places to study and relax, with plenty of facilities like computers and quiet areas. The librarians are also super helpful, and always available to assist with research or any questions I have. These spaces have definitely made my time at Flinders much better and helped me stay focused and productive.”

Additionally, the university’s community-centred environment provided Ahlam with the opportunity to meet new people and make friends with students from around the world. Student support services such as International Student Services (ISS) and Flinders University Student Association (FUSA)  encourage students to get involved in the social aspects of university life, ensuring they never feel alone while studying overseas and away from home.

“I’ve found it easy to connect with students from all over the world, and there are many opportunities to get involved in social and academic events. The university offers great support for international students, making it feel like a home away from home,” she says.
