Building a career in Cyber Security with Didula

IT student from Sri Lanka, Didula

“The dynamic and constantly changing field of cybersecurity, where there are new challenges, every day has always captivated me – the growing significance of data protection in our digital age sparked my love for this sector.”

Driven by a passion for technology and its role in shaping the future, Didula set his sights on a career full of growth, innovation, and possibility. With the tech landscape constantly evolving, he chose to pursue a Bachelor of Information Technology, specialising in cybersecurity, turning his interest into a career that is crucial to today’s connected world.

“Building a solid foundation in digital forensics, network security, ethical hacking, and cybersecurity is the main goal of my studies. Flinders is unique because it emphasises experiential learning, which has enabled me to use my theoretical knowledge in practical situations,” says Didula.

His decision to relocate from his home country of Sri Lanka to Adelaide, Australia, was heavily influenced by the opportunity to undertake real-world, industry-relevant study opportunities, which he found at Flinders University. Backed by a curriculum rich in real-world application, Didula has been able to put his knowledge into action, developing his skills through practical experiences that closely reflect the demands and dynamics of the tech industry.

“Flinders is a great option for anyone wishing to establish a solid foundation in their area because of its emphasis on innovation, student assistance, and hands-on learning. As an example, taking part in this as part of my coursework improved my problem-solving abilities and allowed me to work with colleagues from many fields to create sustainable solutions.”

Offered at Flinders state-of-the-art Tonsley campus or the Flinders City Campus in the heart of Adelaide’s CBD, our Information Technology degrees put students at the centre of industry-focused learning, guided by passionate and experienced academics.

“The instructors’ interactive teaching style has been one of the most fascinating parts of my education. Many of my teachers have backgrounds in the industry and offer practical knowledge to the classroom, which helps students grasp difficult ideas,” he explains.

Beyond feeling supported in the classroom, Didula found that the sense of community and guidance at Flinders extended well beyond his academics. He credits a wide range of support networks for helping him settle in and thrive, both personally and professionally.

“My academic experience has also been more seamless and interesting thanks to the university’s robust support network, which includes active student groups, career counselling, and student services.”

Eager to make the most of his university experience, Didula has taken full advantage of the resources available on campus. Through workshops, career services, interview preparation, and involvement in student-led organisations, he’s built meaningful connections, boosted his confidence, and gained valuable skills to shape his future career — and he encourages future students to follow in his footsteps.

“I have profited from Flinders’ amazing support system, hands-on learning opportunities, and chances to interact with a varied student body as an international student. At Flinders, you will not only graduate with a degree but also with priceless talents, connections, and life-changing experiences,” says Didula.

Laying the groundwork for success

With his sights set on the future, Didula dreams of becoming a cybersecurity analyst, specialising in network security, threat detection, and digital forensics. But he’s not just waiting for graduation to chase that dream. He’s already taken the first big step towards his goals and secured a placement position as Learning Technology Project Assistant at Flinders. This allows him to gain hands-on experience and build a strong foundation for future career opportunities.

“I have a solid understanding of cybersecurity principles, hands-on network security abilities, and familiarity with industry-standard technologies thanks to my education at Flinders University. I am now ready for a dynamic future in cybersecurity thanks to this degree,” he says.

As well as the fundamentals and skills he has learnt at Flinders, and the hands-on experience he will gain through his new IT position, Didula wants to expand on his education and qualifications within the space to strengthen his credentials. He plans on earning advanced industry certifications to help take his career to the next level.

“My ultimate objective is to be on the cutting edge of cybersecurity advancements while helping to create a safe online environment. By giving me the technical know-how and real-world experience I need to succeed, Flinders University has played a crucial role in preparing me for this.”
