“The more I’ve learned about the Australian healthcare system and the more I’ve reflected on the one I grew up with, the more I’ve become driven by the broader picture of mental wellbeing and education.”
Looking to pursue a career in clinical psychology, Vietnamese student Hildy began her Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) degree at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia. Leaving her home in the bustling big city of Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, Hildy was immediately drawn to the peaceful and close-knit community that Adelaide offers.
“I appreciate how interconnected everything here feels, as if I’m part of an invisible web of human connection,” she says.
Describing Adelaide as the peaceful retreat she had always longed for, Hildy felt at ease beginning her studies in an environment where she could truly settle in, feel supported, and confidently take on new challenges.
Student-centred learning
During her studies, Hildy has been impressed by the structure and practical focus of Flinders’ psychology courses. Fully accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), these courses arm students with the skills and knowledge needed for careers across clinical, educational, organisational, or academic settings.
“The psychology program is exceptionally well-structured. The department is consistently supportive, offering invaluable opportunities through initiatives such as the mentor-mentee program, course representation, and lab volunteering,” she says.
For Hildy, these opportunities extended well beyond the classroom. A standout experience for her was volunteering within the college, where she worked closely with senior teaching faculty and observed postgraduate students in her desired field. Experiences like this strengthened her critical thinking skills and provided meaningful, hands-on exposure to the realities of psychology in practice.
With her future career in sight, she says, “I feel equipped thanks to Flinders’ extensive volunteering opportunities, personalised consultation sessions, and a curriculum designed to build essential research and teamwork skills.”
Finding courage within community

As a social individual, Hildy has immersed herself in campus life by taking on key leadership roles at student events. As one of the leaders of the Vietnamese Student Association, she played a central role in hosting the Mid-Autumn Festival and Lunar New Year celebrations on campus, connecting with her community and sharing cultural experiences close to her heart with the wider student body. Her passion for bringing people together stems from her own experience of being wholeheartedly welcomed to Flinders.
“From the very beginning, I’ve already felt a sense of belonging, like I wasn’t alone in navigating a new culture, language, and academic system. Thriving alongside other Vietnamese and international students, I feel seen, supported, and part of something bigger,” she says.
Through her involvement in community and student-led initiatives, Hildy has encountered even more opportunities to shine and make the most of her Flinders experience, including participating in marketing campaigns and a part-time role as a student ambassador – supporting and inspiring future students as they begin their own journey at Flinders.
“My biggest tip is to always say yes until you truly can’t. You never know when luck or a life-changing opportunity is knocking at the door.”
Unlocking new confidence and capabilities
“After two years studying here, Flinders has become my home away from home. This university and city have not only shaped my academic growth, but also transformed me through the people I’ve met and the opportunities I was given,” says Hildy.
Beyond academics and community involvement, Flinders has offered Hildy a space to explore her ambitions, take initiative, and realise what she’s capable of. The combination of supportive faculty, practical experiences, and a welcoming environment has helped her build resilience, confidence, and a clearer vision for her future in clinical psychology.
“If you’re still searching for a place where you can belong, grow, and thrive, don’t hesitate, Flinders could be that place for you.”
