Inspiring Presentation

We recently hosted a phenomenally inspiring seminar by global assistive technology expert, Prof Sujatha Srinivasan from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

In her presentation, Prof Srinivasan shared incredibly powerful insights from her pioneering work leading the TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2 IIT Madras) and the National Center for Assistive Health Technology, AIIMS, New Delhi.

She highlighted the significant challenges faced by people with disabilities in accessing affordable, appropriate, and effective assistivetechnologies – particularly in countries like India, where economicdisadvantage, limited awareness, and access barriers persist.

Prof. Srinivasan explored how her team is addressing these with biomechanically sound, customisable, and cost-effective devices including:
– Manual and motorised standing wheelchairs with unique safety and usability features
– Innovative add-ons enabling seamless indoor-outdoor mobility
– Portable, gamified robotic devices to enhance hand neuro-rehabilitation.

A reoccurring theme was the importance of a holistic, collaborative approach – the “grid model” combining academic research, grants, industry partnerships, and active user engagement – to produce innovations that are scientificallyrigorous, manufacturable, and truly meet users’ needs.

Prof. Srinivasan also showcased how integrating clinical teams, user-driven design, and inclusive manufacturing practices are driving meaningful impact, empowering users with independence and improved quality of life.

Her presentation affirmed the transformative power of assistive technology innovation and the importance of research, partnerships, policy, and training in advancing equity and inclusion in the disability sector.

We thank Prof Srinivasan for sharing her vision and work that are pushing boundaries in assistive and rehabilitation technology.
