Become a Learning Coach for our new first year MD students in 2021

This professionally rewarding role is open to staff involved in the Flinders University MD course, either as academics or clinicians, with an interest in contributing to students’ learning and development.

What does a Learning Coach do?

Learning Coaches provide individualised support to coach MD students to utilise feedback to develop as self-regulated, lifelong learners and competent medical professionals. Coaching occurs during meetings with individual students at various stages across the four years of students’ MD studies. The role involves engaging with approximately six to eight students, commencing in their first year of the MD and continuing throughout their program of study.

Learning Coaches only coach one group of students at a time (i.e., no new group the following year). Learning Coaches are provided with training and have the opportunity to engage with the Learning Coach Community of Practice.

Why become a Learning Coach?

Learning Coaches are well positioned to make a meaningful contribution to students’ learning, and clinical competency, intellectual, personal and professional development. Learning Coaches also develop coal-face insights into the student experience which can inform their own teaching and learning practices. Comments from previous and current Learning Coaches are overwhelmingly positive. It is often described as a “very rewarding experience” that makes a tangible difference to student learning and is highly valued by our MD students.
