Excited by the power to help improve the health of communities through Flinders Public Health

After completing a Graduate Certificate in Public Health, Masters student Tamika Regnier realised that she had only scratched the surface of her learning.

“It is that constant evolution of knowledge, multi-discipline nature and the power to help improve the health and lives of individuals and communities that excites me most about the field of public health,” said Tamika.

Working as a research officer on an Indigenous point of care health promotion program, Tamika originally commenced the Graduate Certificate in order to advance her skills and knowledge and create career progression opportunities.

However, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Tamika realised the breadth of what public health entails and the many ways it is useful, not only in emergency responses like that of the pandemic but also on a day-to-day basis, which led her to study a Masters of Public Health.

Flinders the right choice time and time again

Tamika has been a Flinders student since 2012 when she started her first undergraduate degree.

“At this point, after numerous topics and courses in numerous fields, Flinders feels a little bit like home to me.”

“This time around Flinders was also the right choice for me as it seamlessly offered fully online versions of the courses I was interested in.

“This was vital in me being able to successfully complete a course during the pandemic whilst working full time.”

A standout learning experience

Throughout her studies, Tamika has had access to lecturers that are approachable, responsive and passionate about what they do, providing her with a great learning experience.

“The majority of the lecturers I have had over the course are those currently active in the public health field and are involved in awesome research and initiatives.

“The fact that they still make time to answer questions and build connections with students, even online students, through regular collaborative catch ups makes it easier to navigate post graduate study.”

The constant evolution of the Flinders Bedford Park campus also stood out to Tamika.

“There is always a buzz around campus and students and staff create a diverse, welcoming and supportive environment.

“There is also always something going on in the Hub, be it clubs, special days and events or food. There is something for everyone to get involved in.

“I also love that even as an online student you are always encouraged to come on campus and get involved if you are able to. Many events are created with online activities or options so that the online student community has a chance to get involved.”

A variety of opportunity

As an online student, Tamika did her Masters via coursework and did not do any industry placements, however her course coordinators ensured she still had access to practical experience to practice her skills and utilise her knowledge.

“Throughout my topics I have been able to practice biostatistics and coding, conduct a qualitative focus group and attempt to research, design and put together a public health module.”

Planning for the future

“I hope that having the qualification of a Masters of Public Health will open many doors and enable career progression or change of direction.”

Tamika plans to use her knowledge to improve and advance the program she is currently working on, but also feels she could now explore other opportunities.

“I think with role models such as the many lecturers within Flinders Public Health as well as the key public health officials in Australia today, the opportunities are endless!”

Study your way

For Tamika, studying at Flinders is the embodiment of flexible learning with complete online, mixed, and fully on-campus options to enable students to study in a way that suits their life.

“Flinders is inclusive, supportive and a great environment to broaden your knowledge and make connections. The diversity, community and support at Flinders is also awesome.”

If you want learning options that suit your life and provide incredible opportunities, choose to study Public Health at Flinders University.
