Get to know your College: James Pearce

What is your role and what does your work focus on?

I get to work with an awesome team here in the Discipline of Paramedicine.

I’m currently the topic coordinator for our undergraduate research topic, and also the topic where we teach the majority of the obstetric and paediatric care content. We focus on developing excellent paramedics.

Where did you work before joining CMPH?

Before joining Flinders I was working on-road full-time as a registered paramedic with SA Ambulance Service.

James (second from left) with the Paramedicine-Midwifery Interprofessional Education team at Sturt.

What journey brought you to this point in your career?

This morning: My mother-in-law’s hand-me-down 2002 Subaru Liberty!

More broadly: I had a fantastic high-school biology teacher (thanks Mr. Greig) who nourished my curiosity of all things biology and science. He sparked an interest in becoming a paramedic, which I achieved with a lot of support from my family. More recently, I studied higher education and absolutely loved it, and now get to use both skill sets.

What is something you love most about your work?

When I’m having a chat with a student about a topic, and they have a sudden “lightbulb moment”, where it all makes sense. You can see it in their eyes – it’s a very cool experience. And being surrounded by smart, keen, positive people. “Want to know more about this thing? No worries, go see Professor X three doors down – they’re an internationally recognised expert”. It’s incredible really.

If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

Go for a beer with Anna much sooner. Turns out that was a great plan. And get as much sleep as you can before the boys turn up.

If you had a superpower what would it be?

Time travel for sure. I’d go back and see my Nan, and then play with my doggies, who are on the Rainbow Bridge now.

I’d also like to see the pleistocene megafauna, but then zap out before they eat me.

How do you like to relax or spend your spare time?

Bushwalking, camping, hanging with our animals (dogs, alpacas, horses, chickens etc), and playing/watching sports (including watching the Crows win occasionally!) with my wife and our four boys.

I also have an amateur (HAM) radio license which I’d like to use more when I have free time…one day.

Who is the most famous person you are related to?

Elvis Presley! An I2 haplogroup (distant!) cousin.
