Medical Science students inspired by HGSA Genetics Symposium

Last week, Flinders undergraduate genetics students had the unique opportunity to attend the Human Genetics Society of Australasia Annual Symposium, held at the Adelaide Zoo. Organised by the South Australian branch, the event showcased groundbreaking research in genetics, with topics ranging from mitochondrial disease to the epigenetics of prostate cancer.

The symposium offered valuable insights into careers in medical research and the role of pathology in advancing genetic knowledge. Maja Dickel, a 3rd-year Medical Science student, shared her experience:

“It was empowering to recognise concepts from my degree, especially from Advanced Human Molecular Genetics. I came away inspired to explore how I can contribute to unmasking the origins of genetic disease.”

Maja encourages other students to attend such events, calling it a great opportunity to gain deeper understanding and explore future career possibilities.

“I would highly recommend that undergraduate students interested in medical research take advantage of opportunities to attend events like these, as they offer valuable insights into what a research career entails and the numerous prospects available in various fields both here in SA and interstate.”

The symposium also featured invited presentations by Flinders’ own researchers, Cedric Bardy and Luke Selth, whose talks were excellent and well-received by attendees.

This inspiring experience highlights the importance of student engagement with professional symposia, paving the way for future research leaders.
