For Suranya Siriwardana, the decision to study paramedicine was sparked by the realisation that she wanted a career that was dynamic, hands-on, and made a real difference. After finishing high school in Adelaide, she took a gap year to work full-time in an office but quickly found herself craving something more engaging. 

The contrast between working a desk job and the fast-paced world of pre-hospital care was huge. Every case in paramedicine is different, and you’re constantly learning and adapting. It’s such a rewarding profession because you get to support people in their most vulnerable moments. 

Suranya was drawn to Flinders University because of its strong industry links, and she wasn’t disappointed. 

We were on placement within the first few weeks of our first semester, which is such a huge advantage. Getting that early exposure really helps with confidence and makes the transition from university to on-road work feel a lot less daunting. 

The opportunity to learn from lecturers who are also practising paramedics has also been invaluable.  

They bring real-world experience into the classroom, sharing stories and insights that help us prepare for the realities of the job. The workshop-style classes make it easy to connect with tutors and peers. 

Suranya highlights the paramedicine labs and simulation spaces at Flinders as key to developing the practical skills needed for the job. 

The sim labs really help bridge the gap between theory and practice. They give us a safe space to refine our skills before heading out into real-life situations. 

Beyond the labs, she’s also found some favourite study spots across Flinders’ campuses. 

Sturt Library is my go-to for quiet study sessions, while the City Campus is super convenient with great food options nearby. And FUSA (Flinders’ Student Association) has awesome interactive technology and bookable rooms for group study sessions. 

As she approaches graduation, Suranya is excited about what’s next – securing an ambulance internship and possibly exploring the new Honours pathway in paramedicine to contribute to research in the field. For those looking to advance their skills, Flinders also offers the Graduate Diploma in Intensive Care Paramedicine, with Commonwealth Supported Places available for eligible students.
