When Ellie Jefferson-Wetherill first began university, she was enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws – Legal Practice Entry (Honours), alongside a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) and a Bachelor of Tourism and Event Management. Ambitious and curious, she was exploring multiple fields to find the right fit. But as her first year unfolded, Ellie realised her true calling lay elsewhere—somewhere more hands-on, people-focused, and grounded in purpose.
That realisation led her to the Bachelor of Paramedicine. A degree that’s become more than just a course of study, but a powerful pathway to a meaningful future.
“Studying Law gave me valuable skills and experiences that I really appreciate, but over time I realised I was looking for a different kind of impact… something more immediate and people-focused.”
Changing direction can feel daunting, but Ellie says Flinders made it feel like a natural step. With a wide range of study options, approachable teaching staff and a culture that encourages exploration, she found the confidence to follow her instincts.
“Flinders really supported me through that process. There was never pressure to have everything figured out. Instead, there was room to grow, change direction, and ultimately find what lights you up.”
That sense of support extended into her new degree, where Ellie quickly connected with a passionate community of students and educators.
“From the very first week, I felt welcomed into a strong, inspiring cohort. Everyone – from classmates to lecturers – wants you to succeed. It’s a really collaborative, uplifting environment.”
Now immersed in hands-on learning, Ellie is thriving. With practical skills taught by experienced paramedics, the course has helped her connect theory to real-life impact.
“Learning from people who’ve worked in the field gives you insight and motivation. It makes the learning feel real, and it’s exciting to imagine myself stepping into that role one day.”
Ellie hopes to one day work with SA Ambulance Service, and perhaps take her skills abroad before returning home to continue her career.
“Don’t be afraid to change your mind. University is about discovering what excites you. Flinders gave me the support and space I needed to find my path and I’m so glad I followed it.”
Study in either South Australia (SA) or the Northern Territory (NT), Flinders Paramedicine degrees equip you to play an integral role in the healthcare system, delivering best-practice patient care from site to hospital.
