Originally from Malaysia, Amelia is currently studying the Bachelor of Clinical Science/Doctor of Medicine double degree at Flinders University. Drawn to Flinders for its stunning Bedford Park campus and direct-entry medical pathway, she’s quickly fallen in love with Adelaide’s vibrant communities, beautiful scenery and incredible food scene.
Now in her second year, Amelia is one of StudyAdelaide’s 2025 Ambassadors and is passionate about helping international students feel welcome and supported. Whether she’s sipping matcha, discovering hidden cafés, or diving into assignments, she’s always up for a new experience—and wants to encourage others to do the same.
What inspired you to study at Flinders University?
“Before arriving here, I had never once visited Adelaide, or Australia for that matter. However, when exploring my university options, I happen to stumble upon Flinders University, and the pictures I saw of its Bedford Park campus was absolutely stunning. One other thing that drawn me to Flinders University, is its course options! I have always had the dream of entering medicine, and the Bachelor of Clinical Science/Doctor of Medicine course offered by Flinders university allowed me to have a direct pathway to Medicine, straight out of high school!”
How did you feel when you found out you were selected as a StudyAdelaide ambassador?
“I was absolutely elated when I found out I was selected as a StudyAdelaide Ambassador. I genuinely was not expecting to even make it to the interview stage, let alone be offered the position. It was such an exciting and humbling moment, and I feel incredibly grateful to be given this amazing opportunity.”
What are you most looking forward to in your new role?
“What I am most looking forward to is creating a supportive and welcoming community for new students! I can understand just how overwhelming it may be to start university, especially as an international student entering a country for the first time. Based on first-hand experience, being in a place where you do not know anything or anyone can be incredibly tough and isolating. So, I am extremely excited to be able to empower those who are new and create a sense of comfort and belonging right from the start, making their university life as stress-free as possible. I also hope to foster a community where students can rely on one other and be a pillar of support to those in need, whether that be for guidance, emotional support, or simply friendship. Through providing this sense of community, I hope to make a real difference in the lives of new students, ensuring they feel seen, heard and welcomed into their new environment.”
What’s been the highlight of your time at Flinders so far?
“The number one highlight of my time at Flinders has been the people! I have managed to meet some of my closest friends here at Flinders University and have made lifelong friendships which I never thought was possible in such a short amount of time. Regardless of race, ethnicity, or background, everybody I have met here has shown me nothing but immense kindness, and I am so grateful to have surrounded myself with such amazing people. They are never afraid to lend a hand, whether it be for a close friend or a complete stranger, and that is always something I have admired.”
How do you like to spend your time outside of study?
“If I am not super busy with assignments, I love to just explore Adelaide! My go-to activity is visiting the wide variety of food places and cute cafes all around the CBD area, and possibly extending my radar once I get a car! I am always on the hunt for new places to try out – so if you have any recommendations, be sure to shoot them my way!”
Any advice for other international students thinking about studying medicine at Flinders?
“My advice for other international students thinking about studying medicine at Flinders is: go for it! As a second-year Clinical Science Student, about to begin MD1 next year, I can honestly say my experience has been nothing but rewarding.
Of course, starting out in a new country and jumping into such a demanding course can be intimidating, but at Flinders, you are not alone. Here, they offer a wide variety of things to help aid you on your journey, ranging from supportive learning environments, dedicated professors, and student-led organisations that advocate for both academic success and student enjoyment. I have grown tremendously, not only academically but also personally, thanks to the support I have received during my time at Flinders.
So, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask questions, always make sure to believe in yourself, and enjoy the journey!”
