Reflecting on a Decade of Genomic Change: 2025 John Chalmers Oration

The 2025 John Chalmers Oration, held on 30 October at Flinders University, featured an inspiring presentation from Professor Kathryn North AC, one of Australia’s foremost leaders in genomic medicine.

Delivering her address, Genomics in Australia: A Decade of Change, Professor North explored the remarkable progress made since the establishment of Australian Genomics in 2016. Over the past decade, genomic sequencing has transformed the diagnostic process, allowing for faster and more accurate diagnoses and paving the way for precision medicine to become an integral part of healthcare.

As the founding leader of Australian Genomics, Professor North reflected on its national collaborative model, which has united researchers, clinicians, policy-makers, and consumers. She discussed how the program’s research has built the evidence and infrastructure needed to embed genomic medicine into clinical practice, marking a decade of discovery, translation, and real impact for patients and families.

She also highlighted Australian Genomics’ evolution into a national agency on 1 July 2025, signifying a new chapter in the integration of genomics across the Australian health system. The program’s influence has extended internationally through active participation in global networks such as the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, where Professor North serves as Vice Chair.

Professor North currently leads the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and holds the David Danks Professorship of Child Health Research at the University of Melbourne. Her career, spanning paediatrics, neurology, and genetics, has been dedicated to improving health outcomes for children and families worldwide.

The annual Chalmers Oration commemorates Professor John Chalmers AC, the first Professor of Medicine at Flinders University (1975–1996), whose pioneering leadership helped shape the College of Medicine and Public Health and its research excellence.

Flinders University extends its thanks to Professor North for sharing her insights and to all attendees who joined in person and online for this year’s event. The Chalmers Oration continues to honour a legacy of innovation and excellence in medical research, spotlighting leaders who advance healthcare through discovery and collaboration.
