From research laboratories to student-led initiatives, Lily Bussenschutt’s experience in Medical Science (Honours) at Flinders University highlights how Flinders supports students to build research capability, pursue purpose-driven goals, and find their place within a vibrant university community.
What excites Lily most about Medical Science is the scope of the field and its capacity to evolve alongside new discoveries.
“This field is constantly changing and growing as the research progresses. What motivated me to pursue this career path was the flexibility and freedom of being able to pivot between different fields of research instead of being confined to just one.”
Majoring in Molecular Medicine, Lily was drawn to Medical Science by her interests in biology, biochemistry, and genetics. Across her degree, she has developed a strong foundation in laboratory techniques commonly used in research settings, including bacterial transformations, gel electrophoresis, and immunoblotting.
“Some specific skills that I have been focusing on for the past two years have been my laboratory skills, refining my ability to follow and implement procedures commonly used by researchers.”
For Lily, this structure has enabled a smooth transition from coursework into active research. She is currently completing a placement in the Cancer Cell Metabolism laboratory, where she is contributing to ongoing research projects.
“Having the practical lessons within laboratory spaces provided by my degree has greatly improved my ability to contribute meaningfully during this placement.”

She notes that the practical focus of the course has set her apart when working alongside students from other institutions.
“I was surprised when I learned that other students hadn’t had the same level of laboratory experience.”
Alongside her academic work, Lily has actively engaged in campus life, recognising the value of connection and creativity alongside study. She founded the Flinders University Arts and Crafts Club, volunteered as a Medical Science mentor for first-year students, and sought out opportunities to become involved beyond the classroom.
“Flinders provides so many opportunities. Seek them out, get involved, and don’t let self-doubt hold you back.”
Looking ahead, Lily is motivated by a strong commitment to women’s health, an area she believes requires greater research attention and advocacy.
“The field of women’s health is chronically underfunded and under-researched, and I am determined to make a change to that.”
Lily’s experience shows how Medical Science (Honours) at Flinders supports students to explore research, build capability, and shape purpose-driven careers in health and science.
