In this episode of Rural Health – Real Conversations, host Elspeth Radford speaks with first-year medical student Johanna (Jo) Palenschus, whose bold shift from a successful law career in Canberra to medicine in the Riverland has given her a fresh sense of purpose and connection.
Now studying through the new South Australia Rural Medical Program, Jo shares how a childhood fascination with science and healthcare never quite left her, even as she built a thriving career in the legal field. After years of feeling the pull towards medicine, she made the life-changing decision to pursue entry into the degree, eventually settling in the Riverland as part of the inaugural cohort.
Listeners will hear Jo reflect on the determination behind her journey, including sitting the Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) multiple times, and the challenge of stepping into a science-intensive program without a science background. She describes how the supportive teaching model, close-knit cohort and strong community feel have eased the transition and helped her thrive in her first year.
Jo also speaks about life in the Riverland, from the calm of regional living to the hands-on learning that has shaped her early clinical experience. With interests developing in rural general practice and older persons’ mental health, she is already imagining a future working in regional South Australia and contributing to the community that has welcomed her.
Warm, candid and full of encouragement, Jo’s story offers a compelling look at the realities and rewards of entering medicine later in life, as well as the unique benefits of completing a health degree in a rural setting.
