Rural Health – Real Conversations: Episode six with Dr James McLeod

In this episode of Rural Health – Real Conversations, host Elspeth Radford is joined by Dr James McLeod, a Riverland GP, emergency clinician, educator, and passionate advocate for the future of rural medicine. A Flinders University graduate and the inaugural Royal Australian College of General Practitioners “Rural Generalist of the Year”, James shares his journey into rural general practice and what keeps him deeply connected to community-based care.

Now based in Renmark, South Australia, James works across Renmark Medical Centre and the emergency department at Riverland General Hospital. With special interests in complex general medicine, chronic disease management, skin surgery, and palliative care, his work reflects the breadth and adaptability required of rural generalists.

Listeners will hear James reflect on the moment he learned he had received national recognition for his advocacy and storytelling in rural health. Humble and surprised by the honour, he speaks openly about imposter syndrome, the strength of his rural peers, and the pride felt not just by him, but by the Riverland community he serves.

The conversation explores James’ formative experience as a medical student completing his rural placement through Flinders University in Renmark, an experience that proved pivotal in shaping his career. He shares how continuity of care, strong patient relationships, and a genuine sense of belonging drew him back to the region and continue to define his practice today.

James also discusses life outside the clinic, from five-minute walks to work to conversations about fishing spots and farming that help build trust with patients. As a clinical educator with Flinders University’s MD Rural Programs and the Riverland Academy of Clinical Excellence, he reflects on mentoring students and junior doctors, and why early exposure to rural medicine is key to strengthening the future workforce.

Grounded, thoughtful, and deeply connected to place, James’ story highlights the privilege of rural general practice and the impact one doctor can have across an entire community.
