Strengthening Rural Paediatric Emergency Care Through Local APLS Training

The Flinders SA Regional Training Hub was proud to support 14 local healthcare practitioners to attend the Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) course delivered in Mount Gambier in June 2026.

Providing rural health professionals with access to high-quality professional development opportunities close to home is central to the Hub’s mission. As an internationally recognised standard in paediatric emergency training, APLS equips clinicians with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to respond effectively to critically ill and injured children.

This successful training initiative was made even stronger through collaboration with the Deakin Western Victorian Regional Training Hub, which supported doctors from across western Victoria to participate. The partnership highlights the value of cross-border cooperation in building a skilled and sustainable rural health workforce.

The Flinders SA Regional Training Hub extends its sincere thanks to Dr Lauren Kennedy and the APLS team for bringing this program to the region. Delivering the course locally enabled practitioners to access quality training without the significant travel and accommodation commitments often associated with metropolitan-based education.

Participant feedback underscored the importance of locally delivered professional development, with attendees noting the reduced financial burden, improved accessibility and immediate relevance to their clinical practice. The training strengthens the capacity of healthcare professionals across the region, delivering lasting benefits for local children, families and communities.

By investing in regional training opportunities such as APLS, the Flinders SA Regional Training Hub continues to support the development of a confident, capable and resilient rural healthcare workforce committed to providing the highest standard of care close to home.
