Get to know your college: Dr Winnie Chen

Dr Winnie Chen is a Darwin local who trained as a doctor down south before moving back home to the Top End.

She is a Yr 3 NT Medical Program lecturer, GP and undertaking her PhD with the Territory Kidney Care team at Menzies.

Can you please provide a little background about yourself?

I grew up in Darwin, went away to Melbourne for medical school, and came back to work here. Apart from the Flinders lecturer role, I also work clinically in general practice and am doing a PhD. My research interests are in chronic diseases, health informatics, and health economics.

When did you start with Flinders and what is your role?

I started casual teaching with Flinders as a GP registrar (trainee) in 2018 and have continued since. I mainly teach NTMP year 3 students. Examples of teaching activities include weekly case base learning tutorials, marking for evidence based medicine assessments, teaching and assessing clinical skills.

What do you like about your job?

Working with students helps keep my clinical knowledge up to date. I also enjoy the mentoring aspect of teaching – helping students to grow in their knowledge, their compassion and care for patients, and being involved in their growth from student to doctor.
