Mid Semester Update!

Hi everyone,

It has been a week since I returned to school after the 2 week mid-semester break, and that marks the halfway point of my time here in Flinders/Adelaide.

I spent my 2 week break in the North and South Islands of breathtaking New Zealand (NZ). The close proximity of NZ from Australia (only 5 hours from Adelaide!) makes it a ideal place to visit. It would be very inconvenient and expensive to visit NZ from Singapore as the flight would take over 10 hours. I went with my roommate from Flinders Uni Hall, and 2 other friends from back home who are also in Australia (Adelaide and Perth) for exchange. We rented cars to travel around for the 2 weeks we were there to be able to do and visit more inaccessible activities and places.
Highlights of the trip included quad biking and skydiving in Taupo, whitewater rafting in the Rangitikei River, visiting Waitomo Glowworm Caves, taking photos with #thatwanakatree, and eating the legendary Fergburger (highly recommended!) in Queenstown. In between these experiences were the moving in/out of the many hostels we stayed in (NZ had really good and clean backpackers’ hostels), endless long drives with upbeat music, and beautiful views of the mountains and coastlines along the roads. We had alot, alot, alot of fun, and will visit NZ again if I get the chance.

Back to the grind now after having fun, and [I] am busy doing my assignments. Looking forward to completing them as the tutors here don’t (really) give conventional assignments like writing essays or research papers. Instead, I have a photo essay presentation, a mindmap from a field trip experience, and a think-piece article, which are all pretty cool and interesting to do, while still managing to showcase what I have learnt from classes.

Cannot believe that I’m halfway through my exchange experience here; time really flies when you’re having fun! Will be visiting more of Adelaide in the coming weeks e.g. Kangaroo Island and Hahndorf; will blog about my experiences next time!

Florence Fong is currently on a semester exchange at Flinders University from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
