Angus from Flinders University, reflecting on his exchange at the University of Iceland, during Semester 1 2025.
Just got back from a semester at the University of Iceland and honestly… what a wild ride.
The uni itself is right in the middle of Reykjavík — super cool campus, and such a different vibe to back home. It was a great opportunity to studying environmental science in a different setting, an amazing opportunity when you’re surrounded by glaciers, volcanoes, and hot springs.
Met some amazing people from all over the world — people I’ll be mates with for life. We got fully into the Icelandic lifestyle: heaps of time in geothermally heated pools, cold plunges in the ocean, and soaking in natural hot springs after long hikes.
Highlights? Saw a volcano erupt, went snowboarding, camping all over the island, and caught the Northern Lights almost every other night. Also got stuck in few blizzard, which was… character building. And don’t even ask how many waterfalls we saw — I lost count after the first week.
On the way home, I travelled through Scandinavia and a bit of Europe too. Honestly, this whole experience was next level — would 100% recommend it to anyone thinking about going on exchange.
