A semester at Northern Arizona University

Lucas a Flinders Student undertaking an exchange program during S2 2024.

What was the moment you realised going on exchange was the best decision you made?

I think the moment I realised it was such a good decision was the second night there after we had our first community dinner with all the other exchange students and I got invited back to someone’s apartment with a group of guys that ended up becoming my best mates for the rest of the exchange.

What surprised you most about your host university or city?

The thing that surprised me the most about the university was how easy it was – I was doing five subjects and it was still far easier than doing four at Flinders. The thing that surprised me about Flagstaff was how walkable and easy to get around it was because not having a car was a bit of a concern initially.

If you could give one piece of advice to a Flinders student considering exchange, what would it be?

My one piece of advice would be to start considering it before you even enrol for your first year subjects as you may need to plan your degree around your exchange due to how difficult it can be to find equivalent subjects. I didn’t do this which has meant that I’ve had to extend my degree by a semester but it was totally worth it.
