Flinders University Welcomes the LGBTQIA+ Report and Recommendations

Queer Officer, Riley Jones (he/they) and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students), Professor Romy Lawson (she/her) and FUSA unite to welcome the 2023 LGBTQIA+ Survey Report. We are proud to announce the completion of the 2023 LGBTQIA+ Report, authored by Riley Jones, FUSA Queer Officer, and Theo Warner, President of Flinders University Queer Collective, at the conclusion of LGBTQIA+ survey. This survey has been a powerful tool in understanding the experiences and needs of Flinders University’s LGBTQIA+ students, shedding light on both the strides we’ve made and the areas where growth is essential.

Riley Jones notes, “It details how inclusivity greatly improves the student experience: the active ‘rainbow’ presence on the Bedford Park campus and the affirming practices of some staff shine through as models to be emulated widely. At the same time, the survey identified areas for the University to grow — systemic deadnaming, little visibility across all campuses, and a lack of intersectionality and inclusion of marginalised people identified as areas for improvement.” Professor Romy Lawson adds, “The purpose and essence of the report is to support equity, diversity, and inclusion for all. The report speaks to the very essence of what we want to see at Flinders; for us all to be proud of who we are, our community, and our university. It is about acknowledgment, acceptance, and celebration of our gender, sex, and sexuality-diverse community. Together with FUSA we reaffirm our commitment to creating an inclusive and affirming Flinders University for all.”

The report will be released in the coming weeks. In the lead-up to its release, FUSA will be showcasing key recommendations on social media.
