Flinders-Nankai Graduate Profile – LANG Dong (MAIRET ’03)

Dedication through a continued education pathway for LANG Dong has led to a rising career in economics and government administration. Soon after graduating from his Masters Degree, LANG Dong was hired as an economist. Now he is working as Deputy Director within the Binhai New Area People’s Government in Tianjin. Focusing on relevant and appropriate university courses has been the secret to his success.

LANG Dong credits four especially strong points of the education relationship between Flinders University and Nankai University as the foundation for his study success. Firstly, he acknowledges the importance of programs at Nankai University as being both influential and academically rigorous. He also says that Tianjin’s location has being of strategic regional importance, as the city serves as a window for dynamic foreign and economic trade activity.

Also, the Flinders-Nankai degrees make good economic sense. Competitive Sinoforeign pricing means the degrees are quite affordable for local students, and the program is approved and supported by the PRC Ministry of Education.

He found the benefits of having an international teaching staff for his MAIRET studies challenged him in unexpected ways and led to the development of a broader field of knowledge. “During my studies, I learned more about diverse ways of thinking, from both Chinese and other countries’ perspectives, including their different cultural backgrounds and learning methods,” says LANG Dong.

“I improved self-learning and my ability to see things from another perspective, and moreover, to be able to share my point of view with others. I learned how to discover, analyse, solve, and summarise problems.”

LANG Dong says that while he was studying in the MAIRET program, he was also engaged in foreign trade, foreign investments and trade relations with Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other overseas Chinese contacts. He quickly understood that what he had learned in the classroom could be immediately applied into the workplace.

He reserves special praise for Professor LIU Binglian, for his guidance through the MAIRET program. “He is not only a good teacher but also a scholar and a valuable friend. I learned so much from his way of thinking because he combines both practice and theory.”

Near the conclusion of his study program, LANG Dong had the honour of visiting Flinders University in Adelaide as a part of an outstanding alumni group. “I had the chance to talk with professors, and this experience deepened my understanding of Flinders.”

Since graduation, he has maintained communication with many of his classmates. “The Cooperative Program Office made a WeChat group for program alumni, and since then we communicate with each other frequently.”

Obtaining his Masters Degree led to an exciting pathway in higher learning. In 2005, LANG Dong enrolled as a doctoral student in Industrial Economics at Nankai University, obtaining his doctorate in December 2008. The following year, he was hired as a senior economist.

His qualifications established a pathway to success. In 2004, LANG Dong served as director of the Trade Development Council in the Management Committee of the Tianjin Port Trade Free Zone. In 2010, he was promoted to Deputy District Chief Deputy Director of the Management Committee of the Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Zone, and was also in charge of investment promotion.

Upon reflection, LANG Dong is surprised that his current position is quite different from the job aspirations he had as a child. “When I was young, I wanted to be an engineer. My ideal job would have had me inside a laboratory, inventing things with the most advanced technology,” he says.

“However, by changing paths, I improved my ability to adapt and meet new challenges. It was not easy at all, but through continuous learning and training, I have become a person who serves society.”

The knowledge accumulated from his studies has enabled LANG Dong to view his career through the broadest possible perspective, allowing him to realise the big picture and appreciate the summation of accumulated good work.

“I am proud of what we do every year. A large number of projects are planned and signed each year, and to put this into operation is not a simple task. Therefore, being part of a strong team of investment promoters is something I feel proud about.”

There are many challenges ahead in his profession. China’s large population and small amounts of arable land point to a commitment in the promotion of ecological agriculture and building an agricultural industry ecosystem, which will be a focus of his ongoing career.

Reflecting on his successful pathway through higher education, LANG Dong believes it signals the route of opportunity for other hopeful students from the Tianjin area, made possible by the collaboration of Flinders University and Nankai University.

“I have lived and worked in Tianjin my entire life, so it had always been one of my dreams to study at Nankai University, but when I was young, there were not many Sino-foreign cooperation programs,” he says. “The FlindersNankai collaboration provided a very good new opportunity – something I was quick to grasp. I have certainly benefitted, but I think the relevance of both universities has also benefited greatly from this cooperation program.”[/vc_column_text]
