Getting Flinders future-ready

Since arriving from Sri Lanka as an international student, Janageeth ‘Jana’ Logeswaran (BCompSc(AI) ’24) has grabbed his educational opportunities with both hands. Serving as the President of the Flinders University Student Association (FUSA) while studying, he has also given back as an advocate for international education through StudyAdelaide and General Council Member for FUSA.

His decision to study at Flinders was driven by a combination of academic ambition, personal growth and the desire to be part of a supportive and forward-thinking community.

“Flinders stood out to me not just for its strong reputation in academics, but also for its genuine commitment to student success and inclusion,” Jana says.

“Looking back, choosing Flinders has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It has not only shaped my career path in tech but also empowered me to become a confident advocate for international education and a value-driven leader.”

Jana enjoyed his time embedded in the University community so much that he has stuck around to help develop Flinders’ tech offering into the future, working in the Information and Digital Services area at Flinders as an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Specialist.

“A big part of what I do involves using AI to innovate and help improve internal processes, whether that’s streamlining IT operations or enhancing services for staff and students,” he says.

“What I really enjoy is the problem-solving aspect: every day brings a new challenge, and AI gives us the tools to tackle those challenges in smarter, faster, and more creative ways.”

Jana has always been drawn to maths and technology, so studying AI was the perfect mix of both. It’s allowed him to be part of a field that is constantly evolving and full of potential to solve real-world problems in smart, meaningful ways.

Clearly enthusiastic about his growing profession, Jana says there are a few things undergraduates can do to help themselves get ahead in their career before it even begins.

“Say yes to opportunities, even if they scare you a little. Growth often comes from stepping out of your comfort zone,” he explains.

“Build genuine relationships. Connect with peers, mentors, and professionals and you never know which conversation might open the next door.

“And invest in your skills outside the classroom. Whether it’s volunteering, internships, or online learning, everything adds up and sets you apart.”

One of these invaluable opportunities Jana had while still studying in 2024 was to represent international students at the Senate Inquiry into the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Amendment, which aimed to enhance the quality and integrity of the international education sector in Australia. The ESOS bill also addressed issues like exploitation of overseas students, particularly in the private VET sector, and sought to improve the overall quality and sustainability of international education.

“It was an experience I never imagined I’d have – sitting in a room full of distinguished leaders and representing international students on a national legislative platform was both surreal and humbling,” he says.

“It felt like a big moment, not just for me, but for every international student whose voice deserved to be heard. I saw it as a powerful learning opportunity and a chance to put my advocacy skills into action.

“More than anything, I felt a deep sense of responsibility to speak up and ensure the real stories and challenges of our international student community were represented.”
