Centre for Marine Bioproducts Development Flinders University:Who we are

CMBD has a mission to lead the discovery, innovation and industry adoption of commercial bioprocesses and bioproducts based on Australia’s unique marine biodiversity, to enhance the Australian marine biotechnology industry as a major contributor to the international Blue Bioeconomy.

blogs.cmbd.flinders is the blog site for sharing exciting news and information from the Centre for Marine Bioproducts Development (CMBD), Flinders University. Founded in 2009, CMBD is a recognised groundbreaker in Australia, driving education, research, innovation and commercialisation of marine bio-products and biotechnology.

As a vibrant cross-college research centre, CMBD members are from the Flinders University, College of Medicine and Public Health, and College of Science and Engineering. It is the first facility and grouping of expertise of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

The CMBD novel marine bioproducts scope is diverse, aiming to develop sustainable and profitable seafood and functional foods, marine bioproducts and biomaterials, biomedicine and advanced manufacturing processes within the circular economy context. Through the utilisation of Australia’s unique biomarine resources, CMBD works to develop advanced manufacturing technologies and high-value marine bioproducts to grow the third-generation of Australian marine bioproducts industry, in relation to the first-generation fisheries and the second-generation of aquaculture via commercialisation, education and training. We aim to fast-track the growth of Australia’s next generation of marine bioindustries to meet rapidly growing global demand for certified, safe, sustainable products including; plant-based proteins, functional foods, nutraceuticals, omega-3 oils, cosmetics, biomaterials, bioplastics, and more.

We are globally recognised research leaders in unique Australian marine bioresources to spawn innovation in new marine bioproducts and the latest bioprocess technologies, focusing on green and circular manufacturing. A major objective for CMBD is for Australia to be recognised as a premier supplier and innovator of marine bioproducts globally.

CMBD operates through education and collaborations to connect with like-minded researchers and industry partners to progress regional and global blue bio-economies.
