The nurses at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the palliative care unit took care of my grandfather in his last few weeks.
He passed away last Wednesday peacefully in his sleep and the nurse on duty that morning kindly left a box of tissues for us in the room as we said our last goodbyes.
All the nurses (and there were many) were always attentive during our visits, and so patient, even when my grandpa kept using the remote control on his bed to get himself into all sorts of precarious positions.
Prior to this, he’d been determined to stay at home for as long as possible and received care from a nurse in his home every few days. We, as a family, were so appreciative of this profession. Knowing he was being looked after when we couldn’t be there was also a relief.
