Melanoma research programme, US Department of Defense

The aim of the programme is to prevent melanoma initiation and progression and to support earlier intervention to enhance mission readiness for US military personnel and to diminish the disease burden on service members, veterans and the American public. Applications must address at least one of the following focus areas:

  • prevention of melanoma initiation factors;
  • prevention of melanomagenesis and precursor lesions;
  • understanding the tumour microenvironment;
  • bioengineering approaches to address diagnostics, high risk markers, dormancy and metastasis;
  • therapeutic prevention;
  • minimal residual disease.

Closing date for all Awards is 22nd June 2020

Technology Development Partnership Award

This Award supports cross-disciplinary research into emerging technologies to assist in the detection, diagnosis, prognosis and ultimately treatment of melanoma. The overall goal is to foster collaboration between biomedical sciences and physical sciences and spur progress in the development of computational approaches, bioinformatics, devices or knowledge based products or outcomes. Projects may involve rare melanomas across the entire spectrum from initiation to distant macro-metastasis, but must focus on bioengineering approaches to address diagnostics, high risk markers, dormancy and metastasis. Applications must include preliminary data to support feasibility of the study and be relevant to active duty service members, veterans, military beneficiaries or the American public.

Maximum award amount: USD 700,000, up to three years

Translational Research Award

This Award supports hypothesis-driven, translational, high impact melanoma research. Mature research projects that specifically focus on critical scientific or clinical melanoma issues, which have the potential to make a major impact and supports identifying scientific outcomes, through rigourous, robust research, that are translatable toward treatment or preventive strategies are particularly welcome.

Maximum award amount: Up to USD 600,000 for up to three years, or up to USD 700,000 for collaborative efforts
