Best staff practice for students with a disability

Two Flinders academics have provided exemplars of ‘best practice’ in accommodating students with a disability.

Emeritus Professor Andy Butcher (Speech Pathology and Audiology), and Associate Professor Haydon Manning (Politics and Public Policy) allowed two students with a disability to resit their exams with as much time as they needed to complete. The two students knew the work and could answer the questions, but not in the timeframe given (even with additional exam time provided via an Access Plan).

The Disability Service is aware that other ad hoc arrangements are made for students with disabilities, and we wish to acknowledge and applaud the respect these academics demonstrate for students who just want the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge.  We encourage other academics to adopt this flexible approach to teaching and assessment.

Academic staff are always welcome to contact a Disability Adviser if they wish to discuss any matters relating to students with a disability. Phone Health, Counselling & Disablity Services on 8201 2118 and ask to speak to Toni Crisci or Paula Williams.
