Preparing for the extra second on July 1

Did you know that we will have an extra second (or “leap” second) of time added to Wednesday 1 July?

A “leap” second is an extra second added to clocks around the world to synchronise atomic clocks with astronomical time. While this adjustment is made at midnight Coordinated Universal Time, an extra second will be added in Adelaide on 1July between 9:29:59am and 9:30:00am.

For most of us the extra second will pass in the blink of an eye. Although unlikely, changes in time such as this can cause issues for IT systems. Information Technology Services is therefore taking proactive steps to minimise the likelihood of any issues, and will have technical experts monitoring the situation ready to respond should something unforseen occur. As an additional precaution, a change freeze to all ITS managed systems will be in place either side of the “leap” second.

For more information on leap seconds, please go here, and should you experience any anomalies, please contact the ITS Service Desk on 12345.
