Special NAIDOC celebration and flag-raising at Flinders

A special celebration of NAIDOC Week has been developed for Flinders this year by Ms Latoya Rule, Indigenous Officer of FUSA,  in conjunction with Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Stirling.

NAIDOC’s celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culture is usually held during student’s mid-year holidays. To ensure Flinders University staff and students have the opportunity to be part of such a meaningful event,  this year NAIDOC at Flinders will be held from 10am to 3pm on Wednesday 5 August in the Humanities Courtyard.

As part of our NAIDOC Day, we are excited to be raising the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags on Registry Road, which will remain flying from Wednesday onwards.

The formal flag-raising proceedings will commence at approximately 1.30pm on the Registry Road grassed area with a special Kaurna welcome and smoking ceremony. Professor Stirling will be speaking, along with MP Katrine Hildyard on behalf of the Premier of SA, Narrunga Elder and National NAIDOC lifetime achievement award winner uncle Tauto Sansbury, and Dean of Indigenous Education at Flinders University, Professor Daryle Rigney.

All proceeds from the sale of food on the day will be going to the Aboriginal Riverland Youth Group of SA.

See you there,

Nukkan ya.
