Chalmers Oration – Steve Wesselingh on the long, slow road to Aids action

In this year’s John Chalmers Oration, SAHMRI Executive Director, and Flinders alumnus, Steve Wesselingh will look at the long, and often poor process, the health system moves through from the discovery of a disease to effectively treating it.

Mr Wesselingh will focus on the HIV/AIDS epidemic, which at the time was a completely new “clinical disease” and examine how “the system” discovered, translated and implemented significant positive outcomes world-wide.

He will examine issues that slowed the process, including lack of investment, entrenched practice, time poor practitioners, financial incentives not to change, and the difficulties in changing existing behaviour.

HIV/AIDS: Lessons for Research Translation and Implementation Science is at 12pm this Thursday, 13th August at Flinders Medical Centre.
