Animal Ethics Committee seeks lay member

The Women’s and Children’s Health Network (WCHN) is seeking to appoint one enthusiastic and committed external lay member to the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC).

The role of the WCHN Animal Ethics Committee is to ensure the treatment of animals in programs supported by the Women’s and Children’s Health Network or its staff is in accordance with legislative and community standards at all times. The use of animals for teaching, research or experimentation is regulated by state legislation – Animal Welfare Act 1985.

The Committee must also ensure that all animal care and use is conducted in compliance with the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes 8th Edition 2013 and that it incorporates principles of the three R’s: Replacement, Reduction and Refinement.

Selection criteria:

  • A genuine interest in ethical issues
  • An excellent understanding of privacy and confidentiality
  • Availability to attend seven scheduled meetings a year

The term of appointment will be for three years with the possibility of reappointment for further terms. The position is honorary.
