At the end of the financially turbulent 1980s, commercial insurers abandoned cover they could not economically provide, leaving Australia’s universities without adequate or affordable liability insurance cover for their often sensitive and expensive research work. The solution the universities found was to manage their risks through pooling in a mutual.
