Unimutual turns 25

Unimutual, the asset and liability protection mutual created to service Australia’s higher education sector, is celebrating its 25th anniversary at its annual conference on Thursday, 10 September in Canberra.

At the end of the financially turbulent 1980s, commercial insurers abandoned cover they could not economically provide, leaving Australia’s universities without adequate or affordable liability insurance cover for their often sensitive and expensive research work. The solution the universities found was to manage their risks through pooling in a mutual. Unimutual is now the leading provider of asset and liability risk protection to the higher education sector, and in the last 25 years has paid in excess of $200 million to members.
