Health and safety: events and resources for November

Here are some health awareness events and resources for November complied by the Work Health and Safety Unit:

Bupa Pedometer Challenge – a fully interactive, team based walking challenge is underway, 69 Flinders teams registered and started clocking up the steps, starting on 23 October and finishing on 20 November, good luck and remember to log in each day and enter your steps, where ever you may be in the virtual world.

Movember – for the month of November, get involved, grow your moustache and raise funds and awareness for men’s health.

Lung Health Awareness Month – raising awareness of lung health, check how healthy your lungs are, by taking this interactive Lung Health Checklist.

Asbestos Awareness Month – aims to educate Australians about the dangers of asbestos in and around homes because Australia has one of the highest rates of asbestos-related diseases in the world.

Food Safety Week – 8-15 November – the Food Safety Information Council raises awareness about food safety, busting the food safety myths and providing tips to help reduce the risk of getting sick.

Walk to Work Day – Friday 13 November – building walking into your daily routine will improve your health and well-being. People who walk before or during work are generally healthier, more productive and less likely to be sick or absent.

Skin Cancer Action Week – 15-21 November – more than 2000 people in Australia die from skin cancer each year. Now is a great time to remind people to slip on sun-protective clothing, slop on SPF30, slap on a broad-brimmed hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses.
