Don’t forget to lock your computer

Flinders’ ITS team is warning staff of the dangers of leaving computers unattended and unlocked.

The team wants to remind all staff that unlocked computers provide easy access to anyone who wants to assume a staff member’s network identity and gain access to their applications and files.

Staff are reminded of their responsibility for ensuring their computer is secure and of their responsibility for all activity (malicious or otherwise) that occurs on the Flinders University network utilising their FAN.

To protect your computer session, ITS asks you to lock your computer whenever you leave it, even for short periods of time.

You can lock your computer as follows:

• Windows Users: By holding down the “Windows” key and pressing the “L” key
• Mac Users: By holding down the “Control”, “Shift” and “Power” keys

To coincide with the implementation of OKTA single-sign-on, ITS will be deploying a consistent screen lockout policy to all university staff managed computers.

Once this setting is in place computers will automatically lock after 15 minutes of inactivity, which will require staff to re-enter their FAN password to unlock your computer.

This change will be implemented on Mac and Windows computers.

Lecture theatre, dtudent labs, digital signage, kiosk computers, collaborative spaces and other audio visual computers will not be subject to this change.

Please contact the ITS Service Desk on 08 8201 2345 or its@flinders.edu.au to report any incidents of misuse or interference with any Flinders University computer.
