Australian mining industry veteran helps break the ice

terry-burgess-for-icebreaker-in-fitTerry Burgess, Chair of the Tonsley Redevelopment Steering Committee and veteran of the Australian mining industry, will be among the innovators and other professionals at Icebreaker16.

Icebreaker16 will see Flinders’ New Venture Institute aim for a new world record for speed-networking on 19 October at Tonsley.

Mr Burgess is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and serves on the South Australian Economic Development Board, and the South Australian Minerals and Petroleum Expert Group (SAMPEG).

“With over 1000 people under the roof of the Main Assembly Building at Tonsley, Icebreaker16 will be a brilliant opportunity for people to attend a unique event and see the precinct at dusk”, said Mr Burgess.

“Collaboration and inter-connectivity are integral to Tonsley, which is linked to the world through SABRENet and GIGCity and is just 20 minutes from North Terrace, so it is fitting that Icebreaker16 at Tonsley will bring together innovators, businesses, academics, researchers and other professionals in one place.

Who knows what great connections will be made on the night that will foster new ideas and future innovations in South Australia and beyond?”

Tonsley’s foundational partners include Flinders University, Siemens, New Venture Institute, Innovyz, TAFE SA and SAGE Automation. The precinct brings together vocational and higher education in newly built facilities.

As well as being home to Flinders University’s $120 million Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics School, Tonsley incorporates TAFE’s $119 million complex that brings all the building, construction and renewable energy trades under one roof.

“Tonsley is a truly integrated precinct that has everything from tertiary education and industry-focused research through to commercial operations and start-ups and soon will see the start of the residential development with over 800 dwellings and 1200 residents,” Mr Burgess said.

Mr Burgess has over 25 years’ senior experience in the mining industry internationally, including as CEO and Managing Director of OZ Minerals (2009 to 2014), Head of Business Development for Anglo American Base Metals Division, Global Head of Metals and Mining for investment bank ABN AMRO, Managing Director and CEO of AurionGold Ltd, and Managing Director and CEO of Delta Gold Ltd.
