Awareness campaign and free testing for bowel cancer at Flinders

In the interests of staff health and wellbeing, Flinders University has teamed up with The Jodi Lee Foundation to raise awareness about Australia’s second biggest cancer killer – bowel cancer.

This initiative complements the existing National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) for those aged over 50.

Flinders University’s Professor Graeme Young and collaborators instigated the research program that contributed to the nature and design of the NBCSP and he was a principal architect and driving force of the program.

The NBCSP has since saved thousands of lives.

In Australia bowel cancer claims a life every two hours – that’s around 80 people each week or more than 4,000 each year.

The good news is that up to 90 percent of bowel cancer cases can be successfully treated or even prevented if detected early, which is why screening is so important.

Staff are encouraged to participate in this Flinders initiative by attending a presentation on the importance of bowel cancer screening by Mr. Nick Lee, Founder and CEO of the Jodi Lee Foundation.

The Foundation was established in 2010 after Nick Lee lost his wife Jodi to bowel cancer at age 41, leaving behind their two young children.

The Foundation encourages people to take steps to prevent bowel cancer by screening regularly, acting quickly on symptoms and leading healthy and active lifestyles.
