Using Cloud services at Flinders

Do you currently use, or are you considering use of, a Cloud service? If so, you must consider all aspects of the Cloud service, including security and risk of the cloud service .

Cloud computing is a method of accessing IT applications and services (such as file storage) that are delivered by an external provider. Such services can be flexible, quickly provisioned and easy to access.

Flinders’ Cloud Security Guidance website has been updated and this outlines Staff Responsibilities when using it.

Information Technology Services (ITS) has introduced a Cloud Certification Program that informs staff of certified cloud services and assists staff with assessing Cloud Service Providers to ensure they are:
• Value for Money – by pooling requirements from a number of different areas a single purchase can be made for a more competitive price;
• Adequately Protecting Data – to ensure that Cloud Service Providers adhere to strict security requirements to protect University data, including Privacy Policy requirements;
• Fit for Purpose – services are purchased that meet the needs and expectations of users, particularly with regard to the uptime expectations of services which differ greatly from service to service.

ITS has already certified some cloud services and has a list of those that are intended to be certified in 2017.

If you would like us to consider other research cloud services that would benefit the broader University Research Community, for further assistance please contact ITS via clouditservices@flinders.edu.au.
