Prestigious applied maths scholarship for Flinders PhD

Flinders University PhD candidate Jody Fisher has been awarded a prestigious A F Pillow Applied Mathematics Top-up Scholarship.

The AF Pillow Scholarship, provided by the Australian and New Zealand Industrial and Applied Mathematics society, is intended to further applied mathematics by helping to bridge the gap between pure mathematics and the sciences.

Jody’s current research focuses on developing complex network methods, rooted in the mathematical disciplines of dynamical systems, probability, and graph theory to capture the dynamics of microbial systems to gain deeper insight into the governing properties of these critically important systems.

“I’m extremely grateful for the ongoing support of my supervisors Jim Mitchell and Jerzy Filar, who have provided me with many opportunities, including the chance to attend or present at international conferences and seminars over the last few year,” she said.

“These have given me access to a diverse range of individuals and ideas, and been an integral part of my development.”

Jody, recently named a 2017 Fulbright South Australia Postgraduate Scholar, will soon head to the US to join a specialist complex networks research group and explore alternate mathematical modelling methods for microbial communities
