Hearing Awareness Week 2017

Hearing Awareness Week will run from 20-26 August 2017 and is an opportunity for the community to focus on the needs of those who are deaf or who have a hearing impairment or disorder.

One in six people fall into this category.

Hearing Awareness Week is also an opportunity to educate Australians about the risks associated with long-term exposure to excessive noise, often in the workplace.

Some people are born with hearing loss while others may develop it, as they get older.

Most commonly, hearing loss happens with age or is caused by loud noises.

Damage to hearing is often a gradual process; however the impact of noise exposure can be permanent.

You may be experiencing the early warning signs of hearing impairment if you:

  • can hear but cannot understand
  • find it hard to hear in noisy situations or groups of people
  • think people mumble
  • need turn the TV up louder than others need
  • do not always hear the doorbell or the phone

Flinders University Hearing Services is running a full day of free hearing screenings at the Flinders Medical Centre on 23 August 2017.

Master of Audiology students under the supervision of senior audiologist Karen Sparrow will conduct the screenings.

Bookings are essential.

Please phone 8204 5959 or email fuhs@flinders.edu.au to register for a screening.
