Midwife full of heart helps new mums birth in safety

Flinders alumna Olivia May is assembling birthing kits to give to new mums in developing countries and is looking for help from the Flinders community.

An estimated 385,000 women die each year in childbirth around the world, and many of these deaths can be prevented by improving the safety and cleanliness of the birthing conditions available to new mothers.

Olivia, a midwifery graduate and current Masters student in public health, is working in the Maternity Unit at Mildura Base Hospital and fundraising for Birthing Kits Australia.

A birthing kits only cost $3.00 and includes a birthing sheet, gloves, soap, gauze, cords and a scalpel blade.

Olivia aims to assemble 3,000 kits by January next year to distribute to women and newborns in need.
