Snake safety on campus

Staff and students are reminded that snake sightings are not uncommon at Bedford Park at this time of year and that there are common sense precautions that can be taken to assure safety on campus.

Firstly, staff and students should stay on designated walkways and not venture into surrounding bushland.

Secondly, snakes should not be approached.

In the event of a snake sighting, staff and students are advised to call 8201 2733 to report the location of the sighting.

This is especially important if a snake is seen moving towards a building or carpark, or lying across a footpath or road.

The University employs staff who are trained in snake awareness and handling and can assist in such situations.

After their long winter sleep, snakes are on the move in summer with two things in mind – finding food and finding a mate.

As such, staff and students are encouraged to exercise caution at all times on their travels across campus.

In addition, staff are asked to help keep all wildlife out of University buildings by keeping the windows closed wherever possible.

Not only do open windows interfere with air conditioning, but they also allow birds, insects and other wildlife to enter office and lab space.

Assistance with the above is much appreciated.
