Fourth in a row for prestigious educational award

A pioneering Flinders University science education centre has won acclaim through the prestigious Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) awards, with its highest honour recently bestowed on centre visionary, Professor Martin Westwell.  The award forms part of a four-year winning streak for Flinders.

The Alby Jones Gold Medal Award is presented to just one recipient in South Australia each year whose influence and contribution to educational leadership is considered the most outstanding.

Currently Chief Executive Officer at the SACE Board of South Australia, Professor Westwell was Director of the ‘Flinders Centre for Science Education in the 21st Century’ throughout its entirety – from inception in 2007 through to the end of 2017.

His win reflects the long-term achievements of the innovative initiative at a time when community engagement of this kind was in its infancy.

Over a decade, the Centre worked closely with practitioners and leaders in education, science and policy on a large number of projects and activities; engaging with communities to change thinking in science education and broaden the impact of knowledge throughout government, industry and communities.

The 2018 Alby Jones Gold Medal announcement marks four in a row for Flinders’ impressive educational credentials, with the last four years of the award (previously known as the Alby Jones ACEL SA Fellowship Awards) won by:

2017 – Professor David Giles

2016 – Emeritus Professor John Halsey

2015 – Dr Gerald White

The 2018 Awards evening will take place on 17 May 2018.
