Neuroscience leader receives international honour

Neuroscience expert Professor Marcello Costa has been selected as recipient of the inaugural Federation of Neurogastroenterology and Motility’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

This prestigious international honour recognises Professor Costa’s contributions through mentorship and scientific work, which have substantially influenced progress in the field of Neurogastroenterology and Motility.

As one of the foundation lecturers at the Flinders Medical School (now the College of Medicine and Public Health), Professor Costa helped found the new discipline of neuroscience and has built Flinders’ global reputation in neuroscience research. He is passionate about using neuroscience to overcome traditional divides between the sciences, and also between science and humanities.

Professor Costa’s scientific endeavour has resulted in a range of landmark discoveries about the role of neurons in driving the activity of the gut, and in recognising that a person’s neurological system shapes their thoughts, culture, intellectual capacity, emotions and our bodily functions.

Professor Costa will be presented with his Lifetime Achievement Award at the FNM2018 Meeting in Amsterdam on August 30.
